9. ‘[ Pegasus ]’
Quoted from: ‘The Crucible of War, book 2’, by Barrie Pitt.
“The South African troops themselves were keen, tough and only too eager to undertake any operations allocated to them, and there is no doubt that they were more than competent to carry out some of the more static duties required in ‘Operation Crusader’—such as the investment of the defenses south of Sollum with which 4th Indian Division, the infantry with more experience of desert warfare than any other, had been charged. But Cunningham had intimated to Brink that he wanted the South Africans in the forefront of the battle, and when Brink reiterated that his men required more time, presented him with a virtual ultimatum. Brink must let him know by a stated hour whether his division was in a fit state to play an important part in the battle or not; if not, its role would be reduced.”
This was surely a most unfair burden to place upon the shoulders of a subordinate commander, especially of a Dominion formation anxious to uphold its reputation and again prove its loyalty to the Mother Country. That night Brink wrote in his diary:
“There was no time to ponder or to argue. The Army Commander was applying the acid test. I was not happy about the state of training of my Division and in my heart I felt that it was not in a fit state, tactically, and did not possess the hitting power to engage in serious operations. We have splendid fighting material, well led and ably commanded, but the best human material in the world requires careful moulding and must have the wherewithal to engage a tough and determined enemy such as the ‘Afrika-Korps’. The die was cast, however, the Division was already on the move to its concentration area and the honour of South Africa was at stake.”
Thus the formations given the specific task of seeking out the two panzer divisions of Rommel’s ‘Afrika Korps’ consisted of three armoured brigades of which one—the 22nd—was totally inexperienced but comparatively well-equipped, one—the 7th—was experienced but equipped in large part with outdated tanks (described by general Norrie as being in a state of ‘general debility’) and the third—the 4th—was both experienced and well-equipped with new tanks, but held back from the most likely area of battle by its requirement to protect infantry divisions; all protected on the outward flank of their advance by an understrength division of troops who, in the opinion of their commander, were inadequately trained.
But at least the 4th Indian Division and Bernard Freyberg’s New Zealanders were more than capable of discharging their duties of pinning down and then cutting off the Axis troops along the frontier. Perhaps they might also help in the destruction of the panzers.
“Moreover, a considerable degree of surprise would be achieved, for not only had the combined R.A.F. and S.A.A.F. kept the skies above the concentration areas clear of German or Italian reconnaissance aircraft, but the British intelligence services under Brigadier Shearer had achieved a coup as remarkable in its way as the repeated cracking of the Enigma codes by the Bletchley Park organization in England.”
“On the night of November 16th, five Bristol Bombay aircraft took off from a small airfield near Fuka carrying fifty-seven men and three officers, whose aim was to carry out raids against Luftwaffe airfields in the Gazala-Tmimi area, their special targets being the new 109 fighters which were proving a hazard to the R.A.F. Tomahawks and Hurricanes.”
Meteorological forecasts were excellent at take-off, visibility perfect, and during the early part of the journey there was little wind to confuse the navigation… Soon it was evident that even if the correct dropping zone could be found, cloud base was so low that even for the parachutists to be dropped at the minimum safe height of seven hundred feet, they would have to be dropped blind… in thick fog… cloud base at 200 feet—registered on his altimeter just seconds before it disintegrated in a burst of anti-aircraft fire which came up to greet him. Incredibly, that aircraft survived for the moment, to fly in a gigantic circle as a result of a jammed compass, until it ran out of petrol… But in the meantime, the other four pilots had all pressed on separately through the appalling conditions until they felt that they were over the correct destination, whereupon they dropped their parachutists—disastrously. Many of the men were never seen again, some on landing were dragged by their canopies—caught open by the powerful ground wind—along the bumpy and rock-strewn desert floor to broken and agonizing deaths, and no one escaped the ordeal entirely unscathed.”

Quoted from ‘The Crucible of War, book 2’.,
by Barrie Pitt:
“[The German panzer divisions in Africa]… grown considerably and were in the process of redistribution and intensive training—especially the German formations, whatever their experience or prestige.”
“Generalleutnant Neumann Sylkow’s 15th Panzer Division was now complete, based on the coast at Marsa Belafarit and training hard in the desert to the south, while 5th Light Division had been built up, reorganized and renamed 21st Panzer Division, and was being put through its paces by its new commander, Generalleutnant Johan von Ravenstein, in the area just west of Bardia. Each division consisted of a panzer regiment of two battalions, each regiment with about 170 panzers—Marks II, III and IV, and a few captured Matildas—three battalions of infantry, an anti-tank battalion, a regiment of artillery, a reconnaissance battalion and the usual complement of engineer and administrative troops. These two divisions comprised D.A.K.—‘Deutsches Afrika Korp’—Rommel’s original responsibility in North Africa, now under command of Generalleutnant Ludwig Cruewell.””
[The British Tank Divisions]
“General Brink’s Division had arrived in Egypt with an immense reputation as a result of their splendid achievements in Ethiopia, but their first employment in the area had been to restore the fortifications at Mersa Matruh in the face of Rommel’s advance to the Wire, for these had been allowed to deteriorate after O’Conner’s victories. Even after the immediate threat had died away, 1st South African Division were kept at the task of extending the Matruh defenses even deeper, and the time and energy which could and indeed should have been spent learning the differences between warfare in desert and warfare in bush and mountain were instead spent digging… and [at] static labor… Moreover, the reinforcements sent up from the Union to replace the casualties suffered in the Ethiopian campaign were so inadequate in both quantity and training that the decision had to be taken to go into battle with only two instead of three brigades, and for even this weakened division there was not enough transport until early October… This circumstance not only increased the risk of faulty navigation at crucial moments, but allowed little or no time to rehearse the vital and often complex routines of supply under battle conditions.”
“General Brink on several occasions pointed out these deficiencies in the training of his command to Cunningham, and as late as November 2nd General Norrie after an inspection reported, ‘I must again bring to your notice that I am not at all satisfied with the progress of training of 1 SA Div due to factors beyond their own control…’” “

‘Pegasus’
[The Emerald architect] leaves his office/workshop in order to unwind with some friends for the weekend. He’s going to a Ruby ‘pub’… [EA] wraps up his projects for tonight, closing everything he’d been working on for the evening, and switching off his desk lamp and clearing some room on his desk for himself so he can see while he shuffles a few last things around in his briefcase before closing the office, setting the alarm, and heading home. He was done with work for the week, and he has a night planned, out on the town, with some old friends at a Ruby ‘pub’ planned for this one.
The ‘pubs’…
He hadn’t been making time for friends enough recently, he had factored into his decision making, so [EA] decided a social call was just in proper order. He was expecting to have a really good time, at one of those Ruby ‘pubs,’ considering also the meticulous attention [EA] has paid at work this week, and was prepping himself mentally not to go too crazy letting loose. At work, He was building model buildings, now, and taken on the hobby of building model plains in his down time, and while designing them in the office and then figuring out ways of constructing them in the workshop, his buildings are the way he gets paid. He had architected many buildings, sold some, and buildings and structures of all sorts are his passion, but his recent project was fun because he was overseeing the manufacture of tiny buildings, skyscrapers maybe the size of a real car, or bus, titled vertically, at largest, for various strange projects requested by the other citizens of Utopiaoid, and so he was having a particularly fulfilling time recently with strange work. He was producing these miniature sky-scrapers for a movie-shoot, one for just a series of games that a workshop is providing for people, something about a monster suit, and another where the structures of his meticulous design would be used in a movie to be clobbered to the ground, made rubble, utterly destroyed by some monster, or giant-robot, or hybrid monster-robot, or a giant moth of whatever, and he got to showcase lhis ittle city designs in other people’s art. He didn’t mind them getting destroyed. It was mostly the architecture where the work went. The buildings themselves were getting easier and easier to manufacture as his burgeoning mini-career was developing, each job made the next one a little easier. His works would be immortalized, anyhow, in at least a frame or two of film. Or scanned for a video game. You could rewind it any time and see them standing in their majesty. Plus, they could be shown in my work portfolio, and help get even more clients in the future…
He would swing home, to the Emerald Towers, and his apartment therein, maybe hose off and then head for the Ruby streets where their ‘pub’ was located.
It was a racing pub. The VR simulations there are geared to racing games, multiplayer, and they were the best around. It was a little pricier than some cheaper arcade, but those were for kids, these are for adults. They had some real luxury equipment there. And pizza. You felt like you were really on the roadway, and they had a good scene there, lots of people their age and mentality, and there was always dancing simulators, and the kinds of things you’d come across in any ‘pub’ if racing for a few hours gets stale.
Chrctr#1, Chrctr#2, … Crtr#3 … Crtr#4 ; #1 [EA – Emerald architect], #2 [ST – Sapphire Tribesman], #3 [RP – Ruby Pegasus], #4 [RS – Ruby Sprite]
The introduction will show some Ruby female character either out on the town or preparing to go out. She is maybe in the Pegasus or Pixie/Sprite realm. Maybe chrtrs 1-4 meet together, told through (or from) the perspective of chrtr#1. As these four meet move perspectives to the EA as he wraps up his work in the office/workshop and prepares to meet up with his friends, at a Ruby pub. It was a Ruby Racing VR pub, actually.
A sapphire huddled together in his tribe and community, wrapped in a material to help from the wet and the cold wind mini-season, the tribesman has helped build all the simple structures and fabrics they utilize now for warmth, in times of sunny mini-seasons the community is vibrant and joking and song-sing/story-telling, and they know when it’s time for silence and for winter, and a time for vibrancy, which you can always get away from the Spartan Sapphire life by walking through a port-hole into Ruby, if you want to. The streets of Ruby and integrated society are always nearby.
He too leaves, leaving behind his duties and responsibilities, momentarily, as he too goes to a Ruby pub in order to meet some friends.
Even their games are related to their creature-class . The regular VR games, played around anywhere in the Ruby night/game life are also related and integrated into the … system and games played in public with generally everybody involved being physically located in that same room, or pub, are participants in the public game.
They are going to a racing simulator for drinks and some fun, and we see their different perspectives as they’re arriving to the pub,
And at the end they run into some conflict, leading to the broader problem of crime and burgeoning black markets within society at large.
Crtr#1 is a Sprite or Pixie creature-class. She is focused on socializing, and so making sure this group is brought together every once in awhile, as difficult as it may be with everyone’s schedules, was under her purview, and she took charge.
Chrtr#4 is a centaur, so he’s an athlete. He wants to go to the Centaur pub nearby to hear the sports scores for the evening.
Chrtr 2&3 not decided yet. Maybe they’re both Pegasus. They both are into racing, but maybe one is in construction and the other in …
How about the total arc is about these partygoers enjoying a night on the town, but they…
I don’t think just meet and have a good time is a good story.
meet some weird guy who ends up being a creep and …
Then a Gargoyle tracks him down and saves the group in the nick of time, as the conclusion.
The pubs are becoming points of addiction and degeneracy. For some the addiction to stimulation has lead to other moral failings and after awhile of these lifestyles and technology mediums interfacing together we have gone from a utopian ideal and rather quickly downward to a machine churning out debauchery, desperation and violence, which is now even more of a
introduced. The vampire has been invited back inside the home of humanity’s dark side.
Or …
… maybe some kind of street race , rife now with gangs not only for the machismo adrenaline-addicted races, but for the gambling, and the hyper-sexualized party promotion enterprises, for Pergasus. High octane bets get groups or individuals in big problems.
Or …
… a militia interrupts, and we see how crime itself has evolved on the macro scale. (I wanted to do a segment where to encourage the non-use of lethal force, the pursuing swat teams will match the weaponry in kind, of they’re using bean-bag rounds then the cops will. Maybe this is a little too silly, but fun, and also I want to outline that they are not intending to eliminate crime from the spirit of their utopian ideals). Some gangs are organized into small militia groups, and regions sometimes need to be brought to heel.
Betting and gambling have been on the rise, and many disputes turn into potential bloodshed from that realm also.
The group saved by the Gargoyle will see later an eruption of their predicament in the criminal world that leads to a suppression of a gang uprising by the Gorgon mob-suppression task force. They are brushed away from the kidnapper, who has affiliations with the racing gang,!but because of their timing they don’t get swept up in the gangwar shoot-out that was about to take place. Maybe the news casts how it was the worst moment of violence, the most mayhem the asteroid society had seen up to that time.
[EA] is a Beholder. It’s a kind of floating eye-monster in mythology. Architects and also involved in Economics, economic planning etc. He wouldn’t say this, because his friends would know all of this, so this will have to be narrated to audience directly.
Chrtr#1
[Female partygoer]
Chrtr#2
[Male partygoer]
[Racing pro]
Someone to build repoire with.
They know one guy, through one of the girls probably, who’s a successful racing pro, and he is connected to the scene.
Fed up a little with the unreality of the VR simulators, the group work themselves up into testing their mettle in a ‘real’ race.
[
A little story about Pegasus-types, … out on the town in Ruby, enjoying the typical nightlife.
Maybe this will be part of the totality of a kind of Ruby / Pegasus segment… a little slice of life on the Asteroid, away from the anchor of main characters.
What creature classes like to party? All of them. Gargoyles tend to spend too much time at the bars. They all like to party and spending too much time at the pubs is a problem for all of them. For some people it’s not a problem.
What kind of VR game would be played ubiquitously by polite society? Something like Mario Cart meets DDR?
Maybe rich people play actual meteor mining wars, with robots actually constructing things in deep space.
I would imagine MechWarrior type games would be the best fit for the medium of gaming, but I think mass society wouldn’t necessarily get behind it, and it doesn’t seem to pair well with getting all dressed up to go out and be social at the night clubs, but there are niche communities who would prefer things like that all over.
Maybe a type of role playing VR nightclub where they simulate dating… and then it turns out at the end to actually be a vampire simulator. The Gargoyles have programmed and added a Vampire Hunter expansion package.
A war command scenario, fingers cross there will be simulators like this, and perhaps the most popular of these games, the biggest ‘brand,’ is replicating the battles of the meteor wars that the rich people are actually playing for real. The battles occur in relatively tiny fragments of time, as materials are harvested in real time, and the build-up of robotic forces happens in real time as well. The battles are few and far between, but with such material riches on the line the wealthy, usually Emeralds, find the biggest rush when a conflict arises and they are called to their offices in order to coordinate a Defensive.

Pegasus end
Pegasus will end with the glimmers of the gargoyle story arc.
We could have a real cliffhanger then, as the shit is about to go down. And then the more serious-reality they face right at the end, and then the Gargoyle realm is entered in.
And, may actually start, with Molly’s first term, and maybe some first person perspective, in her first year as a ‘genie.’
So ultimately when it’s all wrapped up, we’ll probably name this ‘Genie’ and then Pegasus will be the 2nd chapter, and then Gargoyle is the third. (or, instead, have Pegasus be first and make Genie the name of the 2nd story, an intro by Molly, and featuring The Gargoyle)
Depending on how deeply to dive on this kind of thing we may or may not move on to the end of their education career-run, AL had stayed on Gargoyle for about a half a decade… before moving on, finally… to Hydra. However, the next bit will be about Gorgon, and then we will move on to the second act of the overall story, and bring in more than presence of the Earth and so ultimately the coming together of the Asteroid world and the Earth world.
Power man 5000.
…
Gargoyle, zoom back to the gaming era, of the early education simulators, and down the line they kept playing this sandbox style of game, and they tested it with battleships, naval fleets with air support, but nothing, not battle tactic or strategy could beat AL’s swarm. The mass of dark purple octopi that entangled themselves together, taring through everything including the battleship’s steel hull with his hundreds of beaks of hydraulic chomping power. But the really beauty of it was the kind of bio-electric wi-fi resonate frequencies shot out and harmonized by all of them, which connects them together and provides an overarching central nervous system to their coordinate mass, swarms of octopi/giant squid hybrids that intertangle themselves together and form a mass the size of an island.
Quoted from: ‘The Existentialists: From Dostoevsky to Satre:’
Kierkegaard: “By reminding you that this was one of the customary unhistoric heresies of first love I sought to call you to order, and then I was very glad to walk with you through the big, cool, high-vaulted halls of your castle in the air, through the mysterious, half-obscure chambers, through the dining rooms illuminated to furthest corners by a multiplicity of lights, pendant lusters and mirrors, through the small room with folding doors opening upon the terrace, where the morning sun penetrated, and where the perfume of flowers which opened only for you and for your love was wafted in.”
“I will not pursue further your audacious venture as you sprang like a chamois hunter from crag to crag. Only the principle which lay at the basis of your arrangement shall I discuss a little more in detail. Your principle evidently was: mysteriousness, mystification, refined coquetry. Not only the walls of your chambers should be inset with mirrors, but even your world of consciousness must be diversified by similar refractions of light; not only everywhere in the chamber but also in consciousness you would everywhere encounter yourself and her, her and yourself. “But,” you say, “in order to accomplish this the wealth of all the world is not sufficient; in addition to that, spirit is requisite, and a wise moderation controlling the powers of the spirit.”
“Kierkegaard, of course, was far closer to Luther: anti-philosophical and individualistic. A little more subtly, to be sure, he echoes Luther’s famous dicta: “Whoever wants to be a Christian should tear the eyes out of his reason” and “You must part with reason and not know anything of it and even kill it; else one will not get into the kingdom of heaven” and “reason is a whore.”
“… To be sure, Nietzsche was, no less than Kierkegaard, an apostle of passion and a critic of hypocrisy, but he did not extol passion at the expense of reason, and he repudiated Christianity not because he considered it too rational but because he considered it the archenemy of reason; and his caustic critique of faith, both in ‘Antichrist’ and elsewhere, reads like a considered censure of Kierkegaard among others.”

“I found a hatred of reason and appreciated it: at least they thus betrayed their bad intellectual conscience.”

Quote from ‘The Existentialists’:
” ‘Faith’ means not ‘wanting’ to know what is true. Every one of these barbs which could be multiplied almost at will by anyone who knows his Nietzsche, is as applicable to Kierkegaard… seeing as how persistently the Dane deceived himself.”

‘Cartago Delente est’
Quote from ‘Benedict’s Rule,’ by E Michael Jones:
“[Carthage:] MASS MIGRATION This situation came to a head in the years following the mass migrations of 376, when the marauding Huns drove the Goths over the Danube in unprecedented numbers. The more isolated a tribe, the less ethnic it is. A tribe living in isolation on an island in the middle of the sea will generally refer to itself not as an ethnic group but rather as “mankind.” They will only refer to themselves as an ethnic group after they make contact with another tribe. This is precisely what happened when the Goths crossed the Danube in 376.”
”They were driven by the Huns into the arms of the Romans, who were too weak militarily to repulse them and too weak culturally to assimilate them. As a result of failed receptio, the Goths began to see themselves as ethnically unique. Unlike earlier Goths, who had been Romanized by receptio, these Goths were ethnicized by the same process. The process of assimilation broke down because the war machine had weakened Roman culture to the point where the average citizen felt he derived no benefit from it. The war machine contributed further to the demise of empire by its manpower needs. Rome needed soldiers on the borders to fight its wars, but that was precisely where they were least likely to assimilate them. Once the war machine became the raison d’etre for empire, it contributed to the demise of the very empire it was supposed to save. By turning an unprecedented increase in the numbers of people seeking asylum into soldiers, Rome created an ethnic fifth column. Roman perplexity derived from the fact that never before had such a large group of people asked to be accepted into the empire. Assimilation broke down under the weight of sheer numbers. For two years following the crossing of the Danube, those Goth tribes roamed around the lands south of the river causing problems, problems which the Emperor Valens tried to solve by exterminating the Goths who were causing them. Instead, on August 9, 378, Valens marched an army which hadn’t eaten its mid-day meal into battle with a numerically inferior Goth force, which promptly destroyed it in one of the greatest defeats of the Roman Empire. Valens was killed along with two-thirds of his army, setting into motion a chain of events which ended a little less than 100 years later, when on September 17, 476, Romulus Augustus, the Roman emperor of the West, was deposed by the Gothic chieftain Odovacar, and the Roman Empire, for all practical purposes, ceased to exist.”
”What happened during the century between the Battle of Adrianople and the fall of Romulus Augustus was ethnogenesis. During this time, the Goths invented themselves as a people. This is not to say that they didn’t have their own language and culture before then, but it is to say that by the end of this transitional period, they were no longer willing to hand that culture in at the border in exchange for assimilation on Roman terms. Because of ethnogenesis, Rome was first forced to accept the Goths in unprecedented numbers, and then it was forced to accept them on their own cultural terms, and finally it was forced to accept the Gothic kingdom of Theodoric as the replacement for the Roman Empire. Stilicho was half Goth in terms of his blood, but a Roman — no matter what Jerome said about him — in terms of his culture. Gainas and Frigitern longed for Roman titles. But by the time of Theodoric, which is to say at the beginning of the sixth century and around the time that Benedict was born, Boethius, the flower of Roman aristocracy and Roman culture, had to work for the Goths on their terms or not at all, and when Boethius displeased the Gothic king, he paid for that displeasure with his life… The crucial transitional figure in this trajectory of ethnogenesis was Alaric, a shadowy figure who first appears in the aftermath of the death of the emperor Theodosius in 395. Taking advantage of the vacuum created by the emperor’s death, Alaric demanded “command of an army.” No longer satisfied with being an ethnic leader in charge of ethnic troops, Alaric — in 395, at least — wanted to be considered a Roman military man with a proper Roman title in charge of Roman troops. He wanted, in other words, career advancement and was willing to accept assimilation on essentially Roman terms, if not at Roman pleasure, in order to get it.”
